The leaders and activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami broke the police barricades at Arambagh intersection in Bangladesh capital Dhaka and held their rally on the road in front of Notre Dame College in the capital on Saturday to press home their demand to hold the next general election under caretaker government.

The activists of Jamaat, who gathered at different areas of Arambagh since morning, the police barricade at Arambagh intersection at about 12:45pm.

They began the rally at about 2:00pm.

Jamaat-e-Islami central executive council member and Dhaka City South Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul presided over the rally. Jamaat’s acting ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman was present as the chief guest, Jamaat leaders said.

The police, though had earlier said that they would not allow Jamaat to hold their rally at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka, did not create any obstacle to Jamaat leaders and activists while breaking the barricades.

Jamaat had earlier announced that they would hold a rally at Shapla Chattar near Arambagh for today.

However, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, did not issue any permission to Jamaat for holding the rally and put barricade at Arambagh since morning.

DMP’s counter terrorism and transnational crime unit chief Md Asaduzzaman who came to Arambagh area at 10:00 am on Saturday told reporters that they would take legal action if Jamaat tried to hold their rally.

Police Put a barricade at Arambagh intersection in the morning ahead of the Jamaat-announced programme. Another barricade was put up on the way from Shapla Chattar in Motijheel to Notre Dame College.

Due to police barricades, the movement of people, including vehicles, was stopped on the Arambagh-Notre Dame College area.
